Unicorn Donuts – Rise & Sparkle!

Unicorn Donuts – Rise & Sparkle!

About

Donuts are the #1 reason to get out of bed on the weekends, and adding glitter just takes them to a whole new level of luster. In this case, the sugar has a superpower—it holds glitter like glue! Pair with eggs and bacon, and serve up when you want to make an ordinary day feel more magical or perhaps kick off a special trip (Disneyland, anyone?).

Directions

1 Stir sugar, butter, and vanilla in a small saucepan until sugar is moistened. Cook over medium-high heat until mixture boils and sugar is liquefied (about 5 to 10 minutes). Be mindful not to let the sugar become lumpy or burned.

2 Paint your donuts with the mixture using a pastry brush. This will create an adhesive for the glitter—albeit a tasty one! Handle with caution since this concoction will be very hot.

3 Sprinkle donuts with glitter and let cool.

The Sci Behind the DIY

Sugar becomes notoriously sticky when wet, which is why the dentist warns you that it can cause cavities if you don’t brush your teeth with care. When heated to 320°F, solid sugar crystals melt into a syrupy liquid consistency. Since ancient times, people have been mixing sugar and water together to create a natural adhesive. We’ve added vanilla and butter instead to add a bit more flavor, but there are various iterations of ‘sugar glue’ recipes used for decorative desserts (think gingerbread houses and graham cracker castles), as well as craft projects. In a pinch, you can whip some up at home when you’ve run out of Elmer’s, then lick the spoon.

You'll need

  • A box of sugar
  • Plain donuts
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Vanilla
  • Edible glitter
